Tropical Fish Tanks conjour up many memories in my mind.
I remember at a very young age, that my father had a love for keeping tropical fish. In those days, apart from factory made tanks being very costly, it was quite a widespread practice to build your own tropical fish tanks.
I don't remember having the silicon and adhesive products that we see in the stores nowadays. The tropical fish tanks that I remember had a metal framework. Glass was used within the framework and sealed. While I have no recollection of how the factory made tanks were sealed, my father sealed his hand made tropical fish tanks with pitch. The all familiar smell of melted pitch in a can, held with a pliers, still lingers.
I must admit - I have clear memory that sealing with pitch had it's fair share of problems. For some reason, the tropical fish tanks sealed with pitch were notorious for their leaks. Then the process was repeated, trying to re-seal the leak.
Also, the black pitch, along with the touch ups or added pitch, did not leave a particularly neat looking job. The floor could be covered up with gravel or sand, but the sides had this black attempt glaring at anyone peering inside !
Anyway, I remember it as being fun. Quality time spent with my father. And of course the adventure continued all the way through with fitting and stocking out the tropical fish tank.
Does anyone else remember doing the same kind of thing ? If so, do you have any photographs that you would care to share with us ? Also, any information or interesting stories about tropical fish tanks. If so, please mail them to us at tropicalfishtank1@gmail.com
Starting today, this site will be my attempt to gather all the information possible on tropical fish tanks, and find useful and interesting ways to share our interest on tropical fish tanks.
